The Lappet is a widespread but uncommon resident in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.  It inhabits hedgerows and thorn scrub on downland and open woodland.  It is occasionally found in rural gardens.  The larvae feed mainly on blackthorn and hawthorn.  Both sexes come to light.
