Hummingbird Hawk-moth by David Green   Hummingbird Hawk-moth distribution

The Hummingbird Hawk-moth is a frequent immigrant from southern Europe and North Africa, although in recent years it has increasingly been shown to successfully withstand our milder winters in hibernation and can therefore now be counted as a resident, at least in southern counties.  It is active by day feeding on tubular flowers such as Red Valerian, Buddleias, and Lilac.  Larvae feed on Lady’s Bedstraw, Hedge Bedstraw and Wild Madder. The adult can be found anywhere its food plants are available from the coast to inland gardens.
