Varied Coronet - Hadena compta

The Varied Coronet is either an immigrant or introduction that was first recorded as breeding in Dover as recently as 1948. Since then it has spread rapidly across southern England. It principally inhabits gardens and calcareous grasslands. The larvae feed on the ripening seedpods of Sweet-William and Bladder Campion.
