Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey

Can you help us to monitor how well butterflies are doing across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight by taking on a Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS) 1km square. Once llocated, you need to be able to visit your square at least once in July and again in August, in good weather, identifying and counting butterflies you see along two set routes across the square. New Volunteers are welcome to get involved with this recording scheme and help will be given with identification if required. The scheme is a UK wide survey of butterfly numbers using randomly selected 1km squares to assess the changing status of widespread butterfly species which provides an indication of the health of the countryside and urban areas. The scheme has been running for seven years.

We currently have 33 squares in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, many of these squares are being monitored but we are looking for help with some squares which are not currently covered:

SU6231 Ropley Dean, an existing route along roads between Bishop’s Sutton and Ropley Dean. SZ4587 Apes Down, Isle of Wight, not previously walked; this square lies to the west of Carisbrooke SU4613 Harefield, Southampton, this newly allocated square is within a housing estate which features some trees and grassy places SU5616 near Bishops Waltham, a newly allocated square just to the south of the Moors Local Nature Reserve SU7405 Emsworth, a newly allocated square which will feature a walk along a coastal footpath and a road SU7644 Lower Froyle, a newly allocated square which will be walked over, roads, tracks and footpaths.

As mentioned above, recording involves counting butterflies, in good weather, along two 1km long survey route within your 1km square. In addition to visiting in July and August extra visits may be made in May and June. You will be given a map with the routes marked on and full instructions on how to carry out the survey will be provided. With newly allocated squares, where the routes have still to be defined, your local knowledge of the area will be valued to help select the best routes.
