Wider Countryside Butterfly Survey (WCBS)

The WCBS is a UK wide 'light touch' recording scheme designed to monitor butterfly numbers across the UK. Results from these surveys feed into national statistics designed to monitor the health of the environment. Further information about the scheme can be found here.

The scheme works by making a random selection of 1km OS grid squares throughout the UK. Volunteers take 'ownership' of a square, walking two parallel transect lines through the square at least once in July and once in August, identifying and recording any butterflies seen. Walks need to take place in good weather and follow the same methodology used for butterfly transects.

Because squares are selected randomly they can cover any type of habitat, including urban areas and farmland as well as more natural areas. In some cases the landowners permission is required before walks can take place.

A number of squares have been identified in Hampshire which require new walkers for 2018. These are listed below, with approximate locations. If you are interesting in getting involved in butterfly recording and would be able to undertake two walks a year (one in July and one in August) at one of these locations please contact Jacky Adams on 023 8081 3671 (jackyna7579@gmail.com).

Please note that it may not prove possible to walk all the squares listed if suitable routes cannot be found or landowners withhold permission.
